With support of the Anti-FGM Board Kenya we successfully organized the first ever students' conference on the International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM at Egerton University that brought together hundreds of university students to learn about FGM and learn about how they can advocate against it. With the support from different organizations, this initiative has so far empowered and united 1,850 university students and successfully set up 6 Anti- FGM Committees national that will be involved in collecting data and creation of awareness from communities and young people to ensure evidence based advocacy in the Kenya towards joining the advocacy with the slogan, “diversifying advocacy against FGM through students,” under the Students Against FGM Initiative
We have led hundreds of Anti-FGM grassroots campaigns across 25+ Primary and secondary Schools and as well as in Nakuru and West Pokot Counties accompanied with donation of sanitary pads and sexual and reproductive health education through our popular group discussions. This initiative has so far benefitted 2,459 girls across
In 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic that led to the increased cases of FGM, teenage pregnancies and Child marriage, we and partners launched and successfully ran the "Make a Girl Smile Initiative" through which we provided for sanitary pads and sexual and reproductive health education to 1,265 girls in the 4 constituencies of Narok County. This heavily helped mitigate the effects of the pandemic on sexual and reproductive health
Tareto Africa ran the #StopSodomyInNarok initiative for 3 days at Ntulele Primary School and successfully sensitized 471 boys and provided for support for 9 victims of sodomy with psychosocial support, medical and legal support. This was also accompanied by sensitization on drug and substance abuse as well as child protection rights to empower them with their rights.
We have also participated in several online webinars and twitter spaces advocating and creating awareness through social media through daily sensitization on FGM, Twitter Spaces, Twitter Chats, Facebook Live sessions among others
We have also been able do several media campaigns about FGM and Gender abased Violence. These range from social to mainstream media. Among media pages we have been include Radio Stations-Sidai FM, Mayian FM, Hot 96, Kass FM, Nosim FM, TV stations- KBC, NTV, KTN among others
We have also come to the realization that keeping girls in school makes it possible for the to avoid harmful cultural practices like FGM and child marriage which allows them to be successful in life and help their families. Through the help of our well-wishers we currently 4 Girls sponsored for their high school fees and we hope to expand in the coming future to benefit more girls.
